Just days before the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 begins, the USA, Germany, and Greece national teams will meet in Abu Dhabi.
USA Basketball announced the games as part of an agreement with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) at a press conference this Wednesday.
On Aug. 18 and 20, the U.S. Men’s National Team will host Greece and Germany, respectively. Germany and Greece will play on Aug. 19.
USA Basketball’s Showcase Abu Dhabi is its first men’s national team activity in the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi is the capital and second most populous city of the country.
Having won five World Cups, the USA will be among the favorites when the 32-team tournament is held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10.
The USA fell in the Quarter-Finals of the 2019 World Cup in China. The country bounced back strongly two years later when it captured the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo after winning the World Cups in Istanbul and Madrid, respectively.
Taking part in Abu Dhabi is the USA’s second glitzy World Cup warmup event.
From August 11 to August 13, they will compete in a three-team tournament in Malaga, alongside hosts Spain and Slovenia.
In Abu Dhabi, USA’s games against Germany and Greece are sure to cause a real buzz. Both teams have played memorable games over the years. The Americans beat Germany in the Quarter-Finals of the 2006 World Cup. In 2008, the USA Redeem Team rolled to victories over Germany and Greece at the Beijing Olympics on the way to a gold medal. And at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, the USA won the Second Round match against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece.
Over the years, Germany and Greece have also played some memorable games.
